Your Ultimate Guide to Golfing on the Canary Islands - Featured in Golf Drives

Located off the coast of Morocco, the Canary Islands, Spain offer spectacular golf all-year round. Whilst temperatures might drop in mainland Spain during winter, the Canary Islands enjoy the sun all year round, with an average of 19 degrees Celsius in winter and 23 degrees Celsius in summer. Although the Canary Islands consist of 7 islands, the best golf courses can be found on Gran Canaria and Tenerife. To help give you some inspiration for your next golf holiday we’ve chosen our favourite golf courses on Gran Canaria and Tenerife that you can play on all year round.

Gran Canaria Golf Courses

Featuring almost 60km of beaches, volcanic landscapes and a Biosphere Reserve, Gran Canaria is the perfect location for a golf holiday. Golf courses are generally centred around the towns of Telde and Maspalomas on the east side of the island and accessible via a transfer from Gran Canaria airport.

Located 25km to the north of Gran Canaria airport, Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas is Spain’s oldest golf club. Relocated in the mid-1950s, the club is now situated next to the Caldera de Bandama volcanic crater and benefits from spectacular views of the northwest coastline and central Gran Canaria. Featuring narrow fairways, deep ravines and small greens, Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas requires precision and accuracy. Equally as impressive, El Cortijo Club de Campo is routed through a series of valleys, with a lush tropical background. Host to various tournaments, the course has developed an impressive reputation and saw Sergio Garcia claim the Canarias Open de Espana in 2002.

Situated to the south of the island, Anfi Tauro is regarded as one the best courses in Europe. Opened in 2006, the 18-hole championship golf course features impressive lakes and waterfalls, adopting an American-style layout. Closer to the town of Maspalomas, the Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve surrounds Maspalomas Golf. Routed over undulating terrain lined with sand dunes, the layout provides for enjoyable golf along the coast.  Further down the coast, Salobre Golf is the only club in the Canary Islands boasting 36 holes. Whilst the ‘Old’ course has hosted important championships such as the 2006 Spanish PGA, the ‘New’ course has been developed to the high standard.

Tenerife Golf Courses

Home to Mount Teide, the third highest volcano in the world, Tenerife has a great mix of topography, making it a great location for high-quality golf courses. Boasting a total of 8 golf courses, most clubs can be found to the west of the island and can be easily reached by a transfer from Tenerife South Airport.

Situated in the northwest of the island, Buenavista Golf sits away from the typical Spanish tourist resorts. However, this Seve Ballesteros-designed course is worth the effort as it occupies an incredible position on the cliff tops overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. A course suitable for golfers of all abilities, Buenavista makes for the perfect round of holiday golf. Another course that boasts spectacular ocean views is Abama Golf, one of the most prestigious golf clubs in Spain. Featuring thousands of palm trees and dozens of lakes, the course provides a constant test for players. Golf Costa Adeje also features lakes and sea views and uses the natural characteristics of the land to create a truly fabulous course.

Strategically positioned in the main tourist area of Las Americas, Golf Las Americas provides excellent golf facilities in an extremely convenient location. Arranged in two returning loops of nine holes, the terrain gently slopes towards the coast providing subtle elevation changes. Located in the south of Tenerife, Golf del Sur is also easily accessible via transfer. Consisting of three loops of nine holes, the course allows golfers to choose from 3 18-hole combinations, providing amble variety.

We hope this has given you plenty of inspiration for your next golf holiday.
